the strap goes around your cockpit coaming for assisted rescue or around your paddle and underneath your boat to get your foot on it to boost yourself up. Go to YouTube and search for stirrup rescues.

answer 1
The Northwater rescue stirrup is meant for kayak rescues and kayaks sit much lower in the water than a canoe and the rescue stirrup is meant to be used with a kayak paddle outrigger with a paddle float and rapped around the cockpit coaming of a kayak, which is not possible with a canoe. It may be possible to rig some sort of system to use the stirrup to step up and into a canoe that is counter balanced or braced but you would need to experiment a bit to make it work
