For the soft hut slippers/bootie I usually wear either women's 8 or 8 1/2. Would I be the size small or the medium?
Have never tried them on so I'm not sure how they fit

Question
Can you use these as standalone boots?
I live about a 10 minute walk from campus - could i use these as winter boots? Or should i be looking for something more substantial?

Not likely. The soles are intended for use indoors or very short distances in the snow, and they'll be wrecked really quickly if you use them on a sidewalk. They also aren't rigid and don't have any grip. These are really more like slippers.

I saw these in the store, and I would not use them as a winter boot. The sole is soft.

Not sure I understand your question: Hut boots are unisex. To know what your size is, you can refer to the size chart on the description page. For instance size M is Women's 9-10.

Are the MEC hut booties machine washable?
I read that someone did machine wash them. I also read that they develop a smell which is hard to wash out! I'll give it a try.

Yes, these hut booties are machine washable. Just treat them like any other synthetic garment you have. Try to use a mild detergent. Because they are synthetic, they'll dry quite fast. You can stick them in the dryer for a little bit or hang to dry. I've put mine in the washer and dryer numerous times and everything is still great!
