Question

Will the platypus fit in a Gregory Deva 60 pack?

Easily. I slid my platypus into the padding sleeve in my MEC Alpinelite 30 Daypack. The only issue in any pack might be that the plastic (bag or straw) kinks off and needs to be readjusted once or twice a day as you drink it.

Dish brush with soap. Maybe use a weak bleach and water solution (1 tsp bleach per 750 ml water) left standing for a few minutes, but rinse thoroughly following. That's a food handling disinfectant sanitizer concentration for all surfaces in your kitchen.

My suggestion is take the pack to the store and try it. I use a 2L in my Gregory Diablo Daypack and it is a little tight when willed full, but needed the volume but a small pack for AR sprint races.

Question

Is there a way to attach a bladder to my backpack (72L) so that I can use a hydration system without carrying a separate pack?

I hung mine off the top of my pack with a 'biner, secured for lateral swing with some cord. Easy. The plastic bag took many hits on branches and the ground; no punctures.

Most larger backpacks have a hydration sleeve on the inside, against the back panel. This is the best location for carrying your water bladder because the weight is against your back which keeps your bag balanced.

Some people choose to put the bladder in the lid of their pack but this tends to make the pack top heavy.

Question

2L or 3L capacity?

What size do most people use for 3 day hikes? I'm on the fence between 3L and 2L sizes as I will need to refill anyways and I may also use it for running and climbing.

I would go with the 3L. Worst case, don't fill it to the top. Ohh and by the way, if you're going on a 3-day hike... you'll need more than 3L of water - probably close to 2L a day. I would recommend buying a water purifier.

As soon as I saw the words "running and climbing" my mind went to "light and fast" which means choose small.
If you know you will be refilling anyway, then stick with the lightest, most versatile system possible - especially if you want to use it for multiple activities.
2 L would be my choice, however if you are a big person and 3 L is not a big size for you then having more water with you is always a good idea. Think light and fast...then decide what would work for your body size.

Question

I recently purchased a Platypus hydration pack and I am wondering if there are any covers made for over the mouthpiece.

I am concerned that the mouthpiece may flop onto the ground during the mounting/ removal of my Deva 60 backpack.

As a general safety rule, you should never put something that would be poisonous if ingested into a container that is sold and labeled as a drinking vessel.

It is not recommended for fuel storage. White gas or even alcohol based fuel (methyl hydrate) have additives that may harm the reservoir poly material.

Is the big zip pack able to hold warm or hot beverages? Coffee?

They probably won't stay warm for long, and would you really want to drink coffee from a tube, and then clean that tube afterwards. I would personally only use water in mine.

Talking to Cascade Design (Platypus' parent company), they say that you can put hot beverages, included coffee, in the hydration bag and it will not retain any odors or tastes.

Question

Is it worth it to buy just for the maitanience?

What I'm really asking is I'm looking into a new Hydration pack, and the MEC Mountian Fountain looks like a good deal, but the SOURCE water system it includes isn't as (easy) maintenance-free as this one.

I think you will find that you will get several years out of the Source hydration system before maintenance becomes an issue. Rinse between uses and hang to dry and you should be good to go. If you use the bladder to carry liquids other than water you may want to pick up a hydration system cleaning kit MEC product number 5015-829
