You can buy the preloaded Micro SD cards from Garmin or from some marine stores that specialize in sellig to the recrereational boater market. I bought a preloaded Micro SD card which cost around $175 at West Marine in Vancouver and it covers all of Canada. I tested it on the West cost of Vancouver Island and was impresswed with the level of detail and ease of use

If you are heading into colder weather, it is a good idea to use Lithium batteries, as they are much better in the cold then NiMHa or Alkaline cells.

The unit even has a user setting so you can tell it which batteries you are using, and it will adjust the batter charge indicator acordingly.

I have an automotive mounting bracket and cigarette lighter power adapter for my present eTrex Legend GPS which I purchased from MEC in March 2006 and which has just died on me. Will these accessorites work with a new eTrex Legend HCx model?

It depends on which eTrex Legend was being offered at the time. More then likely your 2006 model used the older four pin serial port, thus the USB style port on the newer HCx model would not be able to use the older power adapter cable.

Is a marine/lake map the best map for canoeing/kayaking in Ontario?

I'm thinking water depth, shoals, etc. aren't as important to a paddler as put-in spots, number/place of portages, portage topography, etc. What, if any, is a essential add-in map for an Ontario paddler with a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx?

I read the MEC response and I am familiar with BackRoadMapsBooks as I exchanged pleasant/helpful messages with the President in July 2009. It is important to note that (at least in their printed books) the total distance includes portages. Unfortunately I chose a day trip (the Salmon Lakes Loop) which seemingly had upwards of 75% hilly portages and 25% on the water in Frontenac Provincial Park in eastern Ontario. It was a LOT of work for not much paddling.

The closest thing that I can think would be the Backroad GPS Maps: Ontario - SD card:

It has paddling routes including access points and portages for Ontario and is compatible with any Garmin GPS that has an SD/micro SD card slot. If you're unsure about the compatibility between your Garmin eTrex Legend HCx and the Backroad GPS Maps, I would recommend contacting Backroad Mapbooks customer service:

To further the previous answer, the bike mount listed will fit the HCx, however the clip to slide into the mount comes with the GPS!
The clip screws into the back of the unit, and then slides into the bike mount. The cover that comes with the bike mount kit will NOT work with the HCx.

One idea would be to install a second 12v accessory socket and buy the Vehicle power cable

To hard-wire, you would use the same cable, wired to an unused fuse.

You may need to select a suitable mount to hold the Garmin unit in place.

Garmin Legend HCx downloading multiple caches?

Is it possible to download multiple caches into the Garmin Legend HCx? I can put the chip into my computer and if I do this can I download something like a Pocket Query from Geocaching.com and have the unit read these? Loading them into the unit one at a time is a bit of a pain, especially if I want to go geocaching in the spur of the moment.

Garmin states that this unit is Geocaching friendly.
They also offer a feature on their website where you can register your unit and download thousands of Geocahes at a time:

Garmin does manufacture maps for Mexico for this particular unit; however, it is not something that MEC stocks. I would recommend taking a look at the Garmin website.

The Garmap Africa Series 2010 product set is compatible with all Garmin map-enabled GPS units with a memory capacity of at least 16MB. The functionality is dependant on the GPS device being used and users must note that not all the functions & features described are supported on all models.

I believe that the maps will be compatible with the Vista H; however, with this software auto-routing and Points of Interest (POI) search capability are only available on auto-routing and search-capable Garmin GPS devices. The Vista H does not have automatic routing.

I believe all of the models that MEC sells, except the Vista H and Legend, have the automatic routing.

For more detailed information I would recommend contacting Garmap directly at support@garmap.co.za. You could also try contacting Garmin as well.
