Questions & Answers for Orontas Orontas BikeCare Cleaner

Question

Safe to use on rims?

This cleaner seems to be sold primarily as a degreaser, so I was hoping it could be used to remove some of that coating of black grease/ ground aluminum that builds up on rims when you have rim brakes. However, one of the customer reviews mentions this cleaner leaves behind a small amount of lubricant.

Can you clarify if this could be safely used on rims? I'm wondering if this other customer just didn't rinse thoroughly and the "lubricant" was either the cleaner itself that didn't rinse off, or maybe diluted chain grease mixed with with cleaner. Or should I really avoid using this on rims?

Thanks.

This cleaner should work well for cleaning rims as well as chains, just make sure to remove all the cleaner afterwards and it should not leave any residue.

Question

Which is a better degreaser; MEC Bio-Cycle chain cleaner or Orontas BikeCare Cleaner?

Hand down Orontas is the best.

I used the MEC Bio-Cycle for the last year and it always leaves a lot of black grease on the chain unless you scrub thoroughly with a brush. It is a very mild, weak degreaser.

I just bought the Orontas cleaner a couple days ago and degrease 5 bike chains with it today. I sprayed on the Orontas, let it sit for 5 minutes, and sprayed off with a hose. The result? All 5 bike chains were left with bare metal. I'm very impressed.

That is still to be determined by the average rating for both products.

The Orontas BikeCare Cleaner, while more expensive, is designed to be paired up with a rag: all you have to do is spray on the solution and wipe the dirt and grease off. The MEC BioCycle solution is often used in combination with the chain cleaner (#4007-008), although this is not required.

They should both do the trick (otherwise our Rock Solid Guarantee applies): it depends on which cleaning method you prefer.

Question

is this for the chain or any bike part?

I need to clean the whole bike, not just the chain. Will this work? Or will the biocycle chain cleaner also work?

This bike cleaner is designed to break down heavy grease. It will work best on your chain, but it can also be used to clean the rest of the bike. Since it's thicker than many other cleaners, it may require more rinsing!

The Bio-cycle cleaner is a more liquid, milder cleaner. It is also appropriate for cleaning your bike.

Ultimately, both cleaners will work fine. Which you choose comes down to personal preference.
