The handlebar mount is product #: 5018-946, and not product #: 4013-947, which is for the older eTrex models (not the numbered 10, 20, 30 series).

As Brilm mentioned, the Garmin eTrex30 comes with basemaps, but not detailed city maps. These can be added by downloading free versions online, or by purchasing various map files or preloaded microSD cards.

It comes with a basemap that isn't much use in cities. However, free and legal maps are easily available online. I've used them and found them just as good as the European and North American maps that I've bought from Garmin.

And, I've used it in some bigggg cities for geocaching without any problems (London).

Question

What are the differences between the Etrex 20 and 30?

From what I can see it looks like the extra $100 gets you a compass, barometric altimeter, and the ability to connect to a heart rate monitor...is that it?

The main features that are additional on the e-trex 30 are as you listed:
- Tilt compensated 3-axis electronic compass
- Barometric Altimeter
- Unit-to-unit transfer (shares data wirelessly with similar units)

Otherwise from all the data I have it seems like the two models are fairly similar.

Question

What are the differences between the Garmin eTrex30 and the GPSMAP62S to account for the price difference.

What is important to me is an altimeter, and the ability to load my data to a site such as MapMyRun.com

Thanks

You can compare these products by following this path and using the Compare function:

Home / Shop / Hiking and Camping / Navigation / Handheld GPS

Click the small box on the left of the "Compare" button under the products and then press the "Compare" button.

In your case, it seems that the Garmin eTrex30 would be a better choice. This unit has an altimeter and wireless data sharing, while the GPSMAP62 does not.

Question

Difference between "Garmin eTrex 30 GPS" & "Garmin GPSMAP 62" (repeat)

I know this question has been asked before but, unfortunately, when I compare the Garmin eTrex 30 & the Garmin GPSMAP 62 using the "Compare" feature, it feels like there's a lot of information missing for the eTrex 30.

For example, if I include the eTrex 20 in the comparison, there's nothing indicated for built-in memory for the 30 but both the GPSMAP 62 and the 20 indicate 1.7GB. Presumably, the 30 also has 1.7GB. Similarly, for the following attributes:

- Area Calculation: 62-yes; 20-yes; 30-nothing indicated
- Track Log: 62-10,000pts + 200 tracks; 20-10,000pts + 200 tracks; 30-nothing indicated
- Waypoints: 62-2000; 20-2000; 30-nothing indicated

... several more items like this.

Because of this missing information it makes it really difficult to determine what the real difference is between the GPSMAP 62 and the eTrex 30. The 30 is cheaper but, as near as I can figure out, has more features and is lighter. Makes me feel like I'm missing something about the GPSMAP 62 that makes it more expensive.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Garmin's website has a very comprehensive comparison chart that allows to quickly and easily compare features from different Garmin models. I always recommend members to use Garmin's website instead of ours since the information is complete and more detailed.

A comparison chart between the eTrex 30 and GPSMAP 62 can be viewed here: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/cat...

As for the price difference, I'm unsure about the reason. The GPSMAP 62's quad helix GPS antenna and larger screen may cost slightly more.

Question

RE Garmin 30:How waterproof is this?

I'm looking for a reliable GPS for kayaking, yes, in saltwater. Will this fill the bill? I have an etrex Venture CX but need to upgrade so GPS will talk to my Mac. Any suggestions if this isnt the machine? Need to be able to load topos and/or nav charts in, too

It is not waterproof the Garmin Montana is waterproof. If you prefer this model you can purchase a waterproof case to keep it dry on the water. Both are recommended below.

This unit can be used in Africa but if you want to have detailed maps of the area you are in you must get them to load separately. Check out the Garmin site
https://buy.garmin.com/en-CA/CA/on-...
where it shows the maps available for any particular area you are looking for
